Do ashes go off?
Posted by kerry dibble on
It’s a question many families quietly wonder after a cremation: how long will the ashes last?
Whether you’re keeping a loved one at home, placing them in a niche, or considering a memorial keepsake, it’s completely natural to want reassurance about longevity and care.
Here’s what you need to know.
Do Ashes Ever “Go Off” or Break Down?
Cremation ashes (also called cremated remains) are made primarily from bone fragments that have been processed into a fine, sand-like texture. They are largely composed of calcium phosphates and other stable minerals.
Because of this:
Ashes do not decompose
They do not expire
They do not deteriorate naturally over time
If kept dry and undisturbed, ashes can last indefinitely — hundreds or even thousands of years.
What Affects How Long Ashes Last?
Although the ashes themselves are stable, their environment matters.
1. The Type of Urn
The material of the urn can impact protection:
Metal urns – Very durable and long-lasting
Ceramic urns – Strong but can break if dropped
Wooden urns – Beautiful and sturdy, but sensitive to moisture
Glass urns – Decorative and protective if kept safe indoors
A well-sealed urn provides excellent long-term storage.
2. Moisture & Humidity
Ashes should be kept dry. Excess moisture over time can cause clumping and may affect certain urn materials (especially wood).
If storing ashes at home:
Keep them away from bathrooms or damp areas
Avoid lofts or garages with fluctuating temperatures
Store somewhere stable and dry
3. Burial Conditions
If an urn is buried:
Biodegradable urns are designed to break down naturally
Metal or stone urns can last decades or longer underground
Soil acidity and moisture levels can affect how long the container lasts
Even if the urn eventually deteriorates, the ashes themselves remain chemically stable.
Can Ashes Be Divided Years Later?
Yes.
Ashes can be safely divided up even many years after cremation, as long as they have been stored in a dry environment. Time does not damage their integrity.
What About Memorial Jewellery or Resin Keepsakes?
When ashes are professionally set into memorial jewellery or resin keepsakes, they are sealed within protective materials. High-quality resin or metal settings preserve them securely for many years when properly cared for.
As with urns, avoiding prolonged moisture, harsh chemicals, and extreme heat will help ensure longevity.
Will Ashes Change Colour Over Time?
Ashes can vary naturally in colour from light grey to darker tones depending on bone density and cremation temperature.
They may appear slightly different in different lighting, but they do not significantly change colour simply due to age.
Don't worry...
Ashes are not fragile in the way people sometimes fear. They are stable, enduring, and long-lasting.
For many families, keeping ashes in an urn at home is a deeply personal choice — and one that can safely last a lifetime and beyond.
If you’re considering creating a keepsake, dividing ashes, or simply want reassurance about caring for them properly, it’s always okay to ask questions. There’s no “right timeline” for what you choose to do next.
Grief doesn’t run on a schedule — and neither do decisions about remembrance.
