What is the difference between grief and loss?
People often use the words grief and loss interchangeably, but they don't actually mean the same thing.
Loss is the event itself. It could be the death of a loved one, the loss of a pet, a miscarriage, the end of a relationship, or another life-changing experience.
Grief is the natural emotional response to that loss. It can include sadness, anger, guilt, relief, numbness, anxiety, or even moments of joy. Grief looks different for everyone because every relationship and every loss is unique.
Understanding the difference can help you be kinder to yourself. While you can't change the loss, you can give yourself permission to grieve in whatever way feels right for you.
There is no "correct" way to grieve, and there is no deadline for healing. Your grief is a reflection of the love, connection, and meaning that existed before the loss.
Gentle Ways to Cope with Grief
Although grief can't be fixed, there are things that can help you carry it a little more gently. Talking to someone you trust, writing down your thoughts, spending time in nature, creating simple daily routines, or allowing yourself to rest can all be valuable forms of self-care. Many people also find comfort in creating meaningful rituals, such as lighting a candle, looking through photographs, or celebrating special dates.
For some, a memorial keepsake can become a comforting part of their grief journey. Whether it's a piece containing a loved one's ashes, a lock of hair, or another treasured reminder, a keepsake offers a tangible connection that can bring comfort during difficult moments. It doesn't take the grief away, but it can provide a sense of closeness and a gentle reminder that love continues, even after loss.
Above all, remember that you don't have to "move on" from someone you love. Instead, many people find peace by learning how to carry their love and memories with them as they continue living their lives.
