How Grief Affects Mental Health, Mind and Body

Posted by kerry dibble on

When people talk about mental health, grief is often left out of the conversation. But loss can affect every part of us;  emotionally, mentally and physically.

Grief is not just sadness. It can change the way we think, sleep, eat, socialise and cope with everyday life. Whether you are grieving the loss of a baby, child, pregnancy, parent, partner, friend or beloved pet, the impact reaches far beyond the heart.

Many grieving people experience anxiety, brain fog, exhaustion, low mood, panic attacks or difficulty concentrating. Some struggle with feelings of guilt, anger or numbness. Others find themselves constantly overwhelmed by everyday tasks that once felt simple.

Grief also affects the body in very real ways. Stress hormones rise during periods of intense grief, which can lead to headaches, muscle tension, digestive issues, lowered immunity, sleep problems and physical exhaustion. Some people feel restless and unable to relax, while others feel completely drained.

One of the hardest parts of grief is that it can feel invisible to everyone else. Support often fades long before the grief does. Many people feel pressure to “move on” even though loss continues to shape daily life for months and years afterwards.

Mental Health Awareness Month is an important reminder that grieving people need support too. Compassion, patience and understanding can make a huge difference to someone carrying loss.

If you are grieving right now, try to remember this: You are not weak for struggling after loss. Grief affects the mind and body because love runs deeply. Healing does not mean forgetting. It means learning how to carry love and loss together.

At Shooting Star Creations, I create memorial keepsakes designed to honour the people and pets who will always be loved and remembered. If you think a keepsake might help you, please reach out. I'm here to support you through the whole process - Kerry
