Is there a link between neurodiversity, being queer and being a board gamer?

"That's not a neuro diverse trait, I do that. All my friends at the board game group do that! Oh...wait...." Seem familiar?

How about " Who's even straight anymore? I'm sure most of my gaming group are at least bi-curious". Why is that do you think?

Board gaming has become an incredibly popular hobby in recent years, with a growing number of people finding community and enjoyment in playing tabletop games. Among these enthusiasts are also members of the LGBTQ+ community who have found a place in the gaming world. But is there a connection between being queer, neurodiverse, and the love for board games?

Neurodiversity is a term that refers to the natural variations in human brain function. This includes conditions such as autism, ADHD, dyslexia, and other neurological differences.
There is evidence to suggest that individuals who identify as LGBTQ+ are more likely to be neurodiverse. For example, a study conducted by the Williams Institute at UCLA found that autistic adults were seven times more likely to identify as LGBTQ+ than non-autistic adults. Similarly, a study by the National LGBT Health Education Center found that transgender individuals were more likely to experience symptoms of ADHD and autism than cisgender individuals.
So, if there is a link between being queer and neurodiverse, what does that have to do with playing board games? For many individuals who are neurodiverse, board games provide a space for social interaction that may be more comfortable than other social situations. Board games have clear rules and objectives, which can help individuals who struggle with social cues and communication to engage with others in a structured way. Additionally, board games often require attention to detail and strategic thinking, which can be strengths for some neurodiverse individuals.
For those who identify as LGBTQ+, board gaming can also provide a sense of community and belonging. The gaming community has become increasingly diverse and inclusive, with many board game groups and events specifically catering to LGBTQ+ individuals. These spaces can provide a welcoming environment where individuals can be themselves and connect with others who share similar experiences.
It is clear that board gaming can provide a space for individuals to connect with others and engage in a hobby that suits their unique strengths and challenges. For those who are looking for a supportive community or a new hobby to try, board gaming may be worth exploring.
And if you ever find yourself thinking "well that can't be unusual because we all do that" maybe that just means you are lucky enough to have found your unusual tribe ..... just like I have ❤️
